The weeks before the holidays are packed with deadlines, shopping, travel and social events. It is easy to feel stretched thin. A few practical strategies can help you finish the year strong without sacrificing time to enjoy the season.

1. Decide what matters most

You cannot do everything. Write down your top three work priorities and your top three personal priorities for the next few weeks. Anything else is optional.

2. Plan backward from the holidays

List your deadlines and work backward to set smaller milestones. If you expect to be out of office, tell your team the dates early and set up an out-of-office message with alternate contacts.

3. Batch similar tasks

Group tasks such as emails, calls, errands and gift shopping into dedicated blocks. Switching between different types of tasks wastes time and energy.

4. Use time blocks

Schedule your most important work in your best focus hours, and protect that time. Treat it like an appointment.

5. Start gift shopping and cards early

Make a list of everyone you want to buy for, set a budget and order early to avoid shipping delays. Use a spreadsheet or note app to track what you have bought.

6. Say no politely

You do not have to accept every invitation or take on every request. A simple "Thank you for thinking of me, but I will not be able to make it" is enough.

7. Delegate and share

At work, ask whether tasks can be shared or postponed until January. At home, divide the responsibilities for cooking, cleaning and decorating.

8. Keep your routine as steady as you can

Try to maintain regular sleep times, meals and some exercise, even if shorter. A 15-minute walk can reset your focus.

9. Manage your energy, not just your time

Take breaks, drink water and step outside when you can. Rest is part of productivity, not the opposite of it.

10. Reduce distractions

- Silence nonessential notifications.
- Close unneeded tabs and apps.
- Use a timer for focused sessions of 25 to 45 minutes, followed by a short break.

11. Wrap up the year

Set aside an hour in December to:
- Clear your inbox and files
- Review what you achieved this year
- Write down priorities for January
- Update your calendar and to-do list

12. Plan real downtime

Put rest and fun on your calendar, just like work tasks. A well-rested you will start the new year with more energy.

A simple daily plan

- Morning: tackle the most important task first.
- Midday: handle emails, calls and errands in a batch.
- Afternoon: do lighter work and prepare for tomorrow.
- Evening: switch off and do something you enjoy.

The holiday season does not have to be chaotic. With a little planning, you can meet your deadlines, enjoy your celebrations and start the new year with a clear head.
